Piers Anthony's novel "A Spell For Chameleon" is a fantasy based book set in the country-side of Florida in a magical place called Xanth. The publisher of this novel is Ballantine and Del Rey books. Piers was born in 1934 in England and came to America in 1940. He created his Xanth world in 1977 where his first book "A Spell For Chameleon" won a fantasy award. He also has a wife and two daughters. In the 70's he went from writing all his books in pencils to typing his papers.
During the midst of the book, there are a couple magical fights and interesting characters that someone could never dream of making up. Let's also just say that the main character finds a spell unlike any other of the characters has or ever will have.
The main character of the book is a kid named Bink. Bink is special unlike every other kids because Brink was born without magic or a spell. He lives in the North Village Xanth and a rule of the North Village is that if you don't have magic or can't find magic, you'll be exiled from the village forever. Other characters of the book are Bink's dream girl Sabrina who hopefully can marry some day. His parents names are Roland and Bianca. And one of the head advice characters for Bink is the Good Magician Humphrey. Humphrey is like the wise man of the village. The only problem is that people in the village can only seek advice from Humphrey once a year. And Bink decides to use up that offer and get advice and that's where the adventure starts. One thing that the author gives a hint about the theme is that even though your'e not like everyone else, you don't have to be. Just be yourself and be different.
My opinion of the book was that it had a lot of mystical suspense but also many confusing moments. The book just included so many weird and confusing words and unusual situations that I couldn't piece together.
The first quote was on page 11 and it said " So the truth came out in this moment of crisis. She didn't really believe he had a talent. "Ive got muscle, though!" he yelled back." It explains the phenomena of how Bink has muscle but no magic, and he can use his muscles instead. And the 2nd quote is on page 15 " Night transformers Xanth. Regions like this one that were innocent by day became horrors as the sun sneaked down." This quote talks about the dangers that live in Xanth and night and how powerful some creatures may be that could hurt Bink.
A good text to world is in the book the setting is based in Xanth which is actually in Florida, where the authors lives. This book is similar to the book Inkheart where the books comes alive with all these mystical creatures and mysterious adventures in it. This book didn't really impact me on a personal level because it was a fantasy book based on a kid trying to find his magic and I have no idea how it can affect me.
A good, fair critique. It sounds like this book was just "meh" to you. That happens. Seems like the fantasty/magic aspect just isn't your thing. Hope you find a good book to read this summer!
